This book illustrates a major recent project by Mario Botta, who in recent years has specialized in churches and museums.
In a series of great buildings that are known as ''fortresses'' of art and culture, he has added this unique building that masterfully interprets the fundamentals of the Jewish religion. The two columns at the main entrance are reminiscent of Solomon's temple. The two towers and the interior spaces symbolize the realities of Israeli democracy, joining equal secular and religious aspects of the culture in harmony. There are no decorations, no windows, and no distraction to prayer as such. The towers are not meant to allow light to come in, but to emanate light from within at night.
Mario Botta is the architect of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and has experimented with brick and light like no contemporary architect or designer. |
