Out of the ruins a collection of powerful watercolor images |
Art that emerges out of catastrophe often serves as a catalyst for healing as shattered images and ideas are re-assembled into a new vision of the world. In an attempt to salvage the spirit of the neighborhood surrounding the World Trade Center in the months following September 11, painter Jean Holabird created a series of watercolors that transcend the darkness of the destruction.
Jean Holabird has used the buildings around Lower Manhattan in her work since 1975, the year she moved into a loft in Tribeca, four blocks north of what has come to be known as Ground Zero. Once she was allowed to return home after the attacks, she began to record the dismantling of the ruins. Although not permitted to enter the site itself, she skirted its ever-changing barriers seeking vantage points from which to draw. She then returned to her studio and turned her sketches into striking watercolors.
Out of the Ruins A New York Record is a chronological documentation of activity around the World Trade Center complex in the first three months after its destruction. It is Jean Holabird's personal journey and communicates the atmosphere of a city in stress: the sorrow, the disorientation and the terrible fascination of the site. Chosen by Holabird to accompany the paintings are excerpts from classical and modern poetry and prose by writers such as Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Milton, Hart Crane, T.S. Eliot, Pablo Neruda, Walt Whitman and Frank O'Hara. These words resonate with the pictures; moving voices from the near and distant past that speak to our distress. The quiet strength of this work makes it an appealing alternative to the photos and videos too real to comprehend.
Out of the Ruins A New York Record, Lower Manhattan, Autumn 2001 comes in two book formats. It is available as a spiral bound book in a box and in a hardcover format. This work brings together the powerful elements of art and poetry, and is a unique contribution to American history.
Jean Holabird exhibits her watercolor collections at galleries and other selected venues. This is her first published book. |
